Madison Choi Tae Kwon Do at Pres House: Information and Registration
What is Tae Kwon Do?
Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art, which requires the use of only the hands and feet, without weapons. This martial art was developed during the years of 1954-55 by General Choi Hong Hi. Its roots, however, lie in the ancient Korean martial arts of Taek Kyon and Subak. The ultimate goal of Tae Kwon Do is Shim-Shin Talyune – to achieve total mind and body unity.
Who can join?
UW-Madison students are welcome regardless of physical ability or skill level. Wear loose fitting, comfortable workout clothing (i.e. sweatpants, sweatshirt), and be prepared to practice barefoot.
What should I expect?
Classes are 90 minutes long. The first part is a workout/warmup with conditioning and stretching. The remainder of class focuses on technique appropriate to the individual’s experience level.

Student Commitments
- All classes are free! This is due to the generosity of black belt instructors who teach because of their commitment and love for taekwondo. We hope you will be inspired to invest your time and energy into this martial art because of what you will experience and receive in this wonderful community.
- Fees associated with participation are as follows. Payment for uniform and promotion test is due with registration; dinner fee is collected two weeks prior to the promotion test.*
- Uniform: $40.00
- Promotion Test: $20.00
- Club Dinner & Celebration: about $15.00
- To be prepared for the promotion test, the expectation is that members come to class twice a week. Black belt instructors freely devote themselves to teaching so members are able to learn and grow; members are expected to respect this gift by practicing regularly.
- Promotion tests occur twice a year at the end of semesters and are the highlights of our training. Regardless if you are testing, members are expected to make every effort to be present for these special days to partake of the learning and growth that happens.
